Although the history of our designation of origin goes back thousands of years, it is now 30 years since one of the key milestones in its development: on 3 April 1991, we were officially recognised as a Qualified Designation of Origin, which placed us in a higher category.
One of the requirements was bottling at the origin, i.e. the practice of selling wine in bulk came to an end and all wine covered by the DO had to be bottled in the production area.
This marked the beginning of a period of expansion and modernisation of the Rioja wine sector that has led us to reach higher levels of international prestige.
So today we congratulate the entire Rioja wine sector for its continued efforts to achieve the most ambitious quality goals!
